An enthusiastic crowd gathered May 31, 2013, to celebrate the next step toward a $50 million, three-story medical clinic on the site of the former San Jose Medical Center.
Community leaders and hospital administrators joined in praising the efforts that have brought us to this point. Coalition for a Downtown Hospital leader Rosylin Dean presented a proclamation to the County of Santa Clara and spoke of the need for affordable care for all. statement
We are a coalition of health care workers, labor unions, community groups, health care advocates, the faith-based community and others who came together in the spring of 1999 after Columbia/HCA announced plans to close San Jose Medical Center. The coalition is dedicated to maintaining a full-service hospital and trauma center in downtown San Jose, California. For years we have been promoting our goal the maintenance of a downtown hospital. We have the support of many community, labor, faith affiliated, neighborhood associations and service organizations.
Thousands of individuals have signed our petitions. We have marched, picketed, held rallies, met with elected officials from local to national levels, written letters, made phone calls, spoken at or participated in other organizations' meetings and public events.
We participated in the successful campaign for Santa Clara County Bond Measure A which provides $790 million for necessary work at Valley Medical Center and $50 million for medical services in Downtown San José. We've been busy.
